Fun Things to Do With the Kids When It Is Raining

How many times have you had a family day out planned and then mother nature throws down buckets and buckets of rain? It is not easy entertaining the kids when they are stuck inside because of the rain. However, today I am sharing with you a few fun things you guys can do when you are stuck inside because it is raining.

Movie Day

One of the fun things that we love to do as a family is watching a movie together. But make a real event out of it. Get some snacks, have blankets, lay on the floor, turn off the lights. Make a really big deal about it and get the kids excited for it. Now if you have more than one child getting them to agree on a movie can be tough. So try to get them to agree on a few different ones that they all like. Write the movies names down and then pick one at random…….. this will save you a lot of arguments.

Sometimes what we will do is pick a few movies out before we suggest a movie day. This way it narrows things down a little bit and does help to cut down on arguments. If you are using something like Netflix. Take it from me when I tell you the last thing you want to do is give one of the kids the remote and let them spend an hour looking through Netflix. If you need help picking a fun family movie a few that have been recent big hits with my kids are, Pixels. Trolls, Home Alone, The Goonies, Monsters University and Ready Player One.

Board Games

There is nothing wrong with video games, but there is something to be said for getting together as a family and playing some board games together. Again you can make a big deal of this by playing multiple games. With a board game day, if you have more than one child, you can let each child pick a game to play. You can also then let each child be in charge of setting up and explaining the rules of the game that they have chosen.

From a personal point of view, the games that tend to be a big hit in our house are Monopoly, Top Trumps and anything that is related to what the kids are into. For example, if they like Disney, you cannot go wrong with a Disney based board game. If they like Marvel, go for a Marvel game.

Arts & Crafts

What I love about doing arts and crafts with the kids is that it is not just fun, but you can head to your local cheap or dollar store and pick up a ton of arts and crafts supplies for very little money. When it comes to arts and crafts there are a few ways to go about it. Sometimes I will take the kids with me and let them pick what arts and crafts projects they want to do. Other times, I will just go into the cupboard and get out all the art supplies we have and let them go nuts.

However, if you want to make this a more “family” activity try creating something together. A couple of projects that we have done which have been fun have been first of all creating our own comic book. We each created a character and came up with stories and scenarios for them. We also created our own board game, which to be fair took so long to make we never actually got round to playing it but making it was a lot of fun.

Playing Games

Use your home to your advantage by playing games inside it. Now no two families will be the same and you guys will have your own games that you like to play. My kids love to play hide and seek in the house. They will spend hours playing this game and have a lot of fun doing so. Another thing they like to do is play hide and seek, but with NERF Blasters! You can come up with all kinds of fun games to play together and it is a great way to spend time as a family and also not having to spend any money!

It can be sometimes fun to let the kids come up with games on their own. As with any kind of game created by kids though, you better prepare for a lot of rules. Sometimes I will suggest a game like hide and seek, but then ask each child for an idea of what could make the game better. This way you are playing a classic game, but you are letting them put a bit of their own touch onto the game.
